How to Manually Add Associated Headers

Welcome to this step-by-step guide on associating headers with table cells in complex tagged PDF tables. Properly defined table headers are essential for accessibility, ensuring that assistive technologies can correctly interpret row and column relationships. Manually fixing table headers can be tedious and error-prone, especially in large or complex documents. In this guide, you’ll learn how to quickly identify missing headers, associate them correctly, and complete the table structure so your PDF tables are fully accessible and compliant.

  1. Select the Tag Tool from the main toolbar in the document view.
  2. First, change the tag type of each cell to ‘Header’.
  3. Headers are highlighted with a green background color.
  4. Cells with a red background still need headers assigned.
  5. Next, we’ll associate headers with selected cells.
  6. Select the cells to which you want to associate headers, then navigate to the desired header.
  7. When the header is highlighted, right-click and select ‘Associate this Header’ from the menu.
  8. PDFix automatically sets correct associated headers for each row and column.
  9. It also adds missing IDs if necessary.
  10. With each cell accurately tagged, the table structure is now complete and fully accessible.
